They can make a whole crowd rise to its feet, yet they aren’t even 5 feet tall.
Through funding from the community, Port Matilda’s softball team was given the opportunity to run out with the State College Spikes players before the game on Tuesday.
“I was really excited about running on the field,” said Jessie Nolten, 9. “It was fun.”
“They were like a zillion people out there. Duh, I was nervous,” said Sianna Selfridge, 11.
Although all the girls on the team have been playing for only one year, they are no amateurs when it comes to the game of baseball.
“Yeah, I go here a lot,” Sianna said of the Spikes games.
The girls got the chance Tuesday to experience the game from a professional player’s perspective.
“The girls really like playing. But sometimes they get discouraged. I just tell them if you really enjoy something, keep on trying because you’ll get better and better,” said Allison Hess, one of the team managers.
And the team, sitting in a special box in the stadium, sure had a good time Tuesday.
“My favorite part of the game is when the ball goes into the crowd,” says Jessie.
